Principal Software Architect (m/f/d)
As our Principal Software Architect, you will inspire, mentor, and empower a team of embedded software specialists, championing technical excellence and helping to shape the future of next-generation aircraft and spacecraft. In addition, you will work in close partnership with cross-functional teams spanning systems, hardware, and chip engineering, driving purposeful innovation throughout the aerospace sector.
Your Tasks
- Lead the architectural definition of embedded software platforms for aviation and space systems, ensuring compliance with applicable aerospace standards and safety norms (e.g., DO-178C, ECSS-E-ST-40C)
- Define and steer software architecture work packages in alignment with system engineering, hardware, and project stakeholders
- Specify and review high-level and detailed software requirements with a focus on safety, reliability, and performance
- Design scalable, modular, and certifiable software architectures for flight-critical and spaceborne applications
- Continuously evaluate and improve architectural solutions, development workflows, and integration strategies
- Represent the software architecture domain in internal and external audits, customer reviews, and certification processes
- Define and oversee software verification strategies, including formal methods and automated validation
- Support documentation efforts and provide technical expertise to customer service, sales, and product management teams
Your Profile
- Technical university degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum 10 years of experience in embedded software engineering, with at least 5 years in a lead or architectural role in safety-critical domains
- Deep expertise in RTOSs (e.g. VxWorks, QNX, RTEMS) and embedded platforms used in aerospace applications
- Strong understanding of computer (also multi-core) architectures, fault-tolerant systems, and Ethernet-based avionics networks
- Proven experience in the aviation and/or space industry, with knowledge of current trends, technologies, and regulatory changes
- Solid knowledge of aerospace software standards such as DO-178C, DO-330, ECSS-E-ST-40C, or NASA NPR 7150.2C
- Demonstrated leadership in cross-functional teams and ability to influence technical direction across projects
- Excellent communication skills in English and a collaborative mindset, with a commitment to mentoring and knowledge sharing

We provide an attractive and performance-based salary, which is based on your qualifications and professional experience. This position is subject to the Collective Agreement for Employees in the Metal Trade ("Kollektivvertrag für Angestellte Metallgewerbe") and we offer a minimum salary of € 70,000 gross per year. Actual compensation can be well above this standard.
