TTTECH provides lunar-ready avionics for a wide range of applications

TTTECH and its partner Beyond Gravity Austria have achieved full product qualification for an advanced Ethernet-based networking and computing platform designed for deep space, lunar, and human-rated missions. Developed to meet the highest assurance levels for safety-critical spacecraft systems, the platform combines switch and network interface cards, software, and robust hosting units into a ready-to-use solution for demanding applications from space stations to GEO satellites. With its first major deployment path established for the Artemis program, the qualified product platform is now positioned for reuse across multiple missions to the Moon and beyond, helping customers accelerate critical programs with proven, human-spaceflight-ready technology.

Safety-critical data networks in space need to be fault-tolerant and robustly designed to withstand radiation and exposure to extreme temperatures. In particular systems with a long service life have to comply with the highest standards and pass a wide array of tests until qualification.

“Achieving qualification for a human-spaceflight-capable platform is an important milestone for TTTECH Aerospace and our partners. The program brought together radiation-hardness assurance, advanced packaging, robust hardware design, and qualified software into one standardized product platform. By validating the solution from component level through unit level, we created a technology baseline that customers can rely on for the Lunar Gateway and for future critical exploration missions where dependable data communication is essential,” explains Christian Fidi, Senior Vice President TTTECH Aerospace.

The networking and computing platform solution provides the basis for data networks in deep space and the foundation for seamless and reliable data transfer, connecting modules, sub-systems, and entire spacecraft. It is designed as a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solution but is still flexible enough to fulfill the specific needs of a range of applications. The data network is based on Ethernet to enable interoperability and includes a deterministic component (Time-Triggered Ethernet) for precise scheduling and clock synchronization across the network. This allows fail-safe communication across the network and also simplifies integration and testing.

TTTECH and Beyond Gravity Austria provide equipment based on a commercial implementation of Deterministic Ethernet which is also compatible with TSN (Time-Sensitive Networking), a set of standards that is already widely used in industrial and automotive systems and now also being considered for applications in aerospace and defense.

The recently qualified networking and computing platform is based on a hosting unit developed and manufactured by Beyond Gravity Austria, plus TTEthernet interface cards and switching units co-developed by TTTECH and Beyond Gravity Austria. Its key elements are a modular avionics core unit, and a fail-operational, dual fault tolerant switching unit.

The platform has now passed generic product qualification as part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) General Support Technology Programme (GSTP). The qualification covered the complete product baseline, including the hosting unit, interface cards, the TTEController ASIC, and the integrated software layer. This creates a reusable, qualified foundation for multiple spacecraft applications and enables customers to reduce program risk, shorten integration effort, and build on an established technology platform for future missions.

TTTECH is among the first Austrian companies to develop software compliant with ESA’s highest-criticality Category A standard. Following several years of development and collaboration with leading industry partners, its full space product portfolio is now qualified for human spaceflight missions. This confirms TTTECH’s commitment to delivering safety-critical, high-assurance hardware and software solutions and remaining a trusted partner for ESA, NASA, and their prime contractors.

The Lunar Gateway provided the first major program context for applying this qualified product platform. Specific units based on the platform were qualified for the Habitation and Logistics Module (HALO), including a complex Avionics Core Unit and a fault-tolerant TTESwitching Unit with three network planes. The resulting qualification data packages and product heritage can now be reused for comparable exploration architectures, including lunar habitats, moon ports, commercial space stations, and other missions where reliable onboard communication is mission-critical.

As the space market offers growth potential specifically in satellites (new applications and constellations) and lunar exploration and exploitation, TTTECH is extending its Ethernet-based offering with software-based end systems, the more compact TTESwitch MYTHOS which reuses the GSTP-qualified software, and a Terabit router.

Christian Fidi sees strong opportunities for this standardized platform in the coming years: “With a qualified, open Ethernet-based solution for human-rated and other safety-critical space programs, customers can build on a proven product baseline instead of starting from scratch. This is especially valuable for future Moon Base concepts, commercial space stations, resilient satellite platforms, and exploration missions beyond the Moon, where dependable communication directly supports mission success and the safety of astronauts.”
