The salary (stipendio – the word salario means wage) is stated in the employment contact, and details of salary reviews, planned increases and cost of living raises may also be included. Salaries in job contracts are normally stated gross (lordo), that is, before all deductions and withholdings for benefits, taxes and social security. Employees receive a monthly salary 13 x per year.

The Italian National Health Service (INPS) covers all citizens and legal foreign residents. Upon registering with the Local Health Service, a social security number and a health card are issued. The health card entitles the employee to low or no-cost treatment. Companies based in Italy automatically transfer the social security contributions for their employees and there is an additional public health care fund named “Mutual Help”.
